Golf Clubs

Which clubs should a beginner carry?

Golfers are permitted to carry 14 clubs in their golf bag, however, as a beginner we suggest you carry a smaller number of clubs to help you focus on improving your golf swing rather than worrying about which club you should hit.

The following 7 clubs are a good start:

  • Driver
  • 3 Wood
  • 5 Hybrid
  • 7 Iron
  • 9 Iron
  • A Sand Wedge
  • Putter

As your swing improves, you can add additional clubs to fill in any gaps in distance you might begin to notice.

How much should I spend on golf clubs?

Golf is not a cheap sport. One of the major costs are golf clubs; a set of clubs could set you back thousands of dollars. Luckily, there are always cheaper alternatives available for those who want access to the sport without paying too much.

Generally speaking, you get what you pay for, but you need to consider your goals and requirements.

If you are just starting out and not sure if you will be playing regularly, a budget golf set might be your best option. There are some decent quality, budget friendly options.

If you are in the game for the long haul and want to work at improving your game, you might consider a more expensive set that will help you as a beginner, but that can grow with you as you get better. The better the clubs you get, the longer they’ll work for you.

Golf Club Sets vs Buying Individual Clubs

You can certainly build your own set of clubs from scratch. However, you might find this to be a bit overwhelming as a beginner. If you would like to give it a go, see our Golf Clubs section for recommendations on the clubs that are great for beginners and where to purchase them.

If you don’t want to buy individual clubs, you can opt for a complete golf club set instead. This is a much easier option when you are starting out and can work out cheaper. Check out our Women’s Golf Club Sets & Men’s Golf Club Sets recommendations, listed in order from lowest to highest price.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When you are looking for a complete golf club set, you will often see the number of pieces that comes in the set, for example, 11 piece set. This doesn’t necessarily mean there are 11 clubs in the set; the cart bag and headcovers are usually included as pieces. So an 11 piece set could be 7 clubs, 1 cart bag and 3 headcovers. Make sure you read the description carefully so you know how many clubs you are actually getting.

This set is designed with forgiveness and ease of use in mind, great for a beginner. Note: there is no sand wedge, which isn’t a deal breaker when starting out. You can always add one later as your game progresses.

Callaway Golf Men’s Strata Complete Set

Great beginner set for the price. It is designed with distance and forgiveness in mind. There is more than enough equipment in this set to get you started. Whilst the quality of the clubs aren’t going to be the same standard as a premium set, at a fraction of the price, they are a solid set of clubs.

Note: The Strata is not made by Callaway, but are distributed by them. You won’t get a Callaway logo on this set of clubs, but the fact that Callaway advertise and sell Strata should give you some comfort on the quality of these clubs at that price point.

  • 12 piece set – 9 clubs (Driver, 3 Wood, 5 Hybrid, 6 to 9 irons, pitching wedge & putter), stand bag & 2 headcovers.
  • 14 piece set – 10 clubs (Driver, 3 Wood, 5 Hybrid, 6 to 9 irons, pitching wedge, sand wedge & putter), stand bag & 3 headcovers.
  • 16 piece set – 11 clubs (Driver, 3 Wood, 4 & 5 Hybrid, 6 to 9 irons, pitching wedge, sand wedge & putter), stand bag & 4 headcovers

We recommend the 14 piece set as it has a sand wedge and more than enough of the other clubs to get you started.

Cobra Golf 2021 Men’s Fly XL Complete Set

Good quality clubs that are built for distance and forgiveness. Ideal for the beginner who is committed to improving their game, as this set will grow with you as your game progresses. You have a choice of shaft material (steel or graphite) and flex (regular or stiff).

Shaft Material – Graphite vs Steel

Steel shafts are typically heavier, feels more solid and more durable than graphite shafts. Steel shafts are also more responsive – they vibrate more on impact whereas graphite shafts feel smoother. Beginners who have a slower swing speed might go for graphite because it is lighter and feels more comfortable and easier to hit. However, it really does comes down to personal preference as to which one you choose.

The steel or graphite shafts for the irons only. The driver and hybrids are graphite. So, if you choose steel shafts, the irons will come in steel and the driver and hybrids will be graphite.

Regular vs Stiff Flex

If you have a slower swing speed, you might consider choosing regular flex clubs. The additional flex will provide a bit more power and accuracy. If you swing harder, the stiff flex will give you more control.

This set comes with:

  • Driver
  • 3 & 5 Fairway Wood
  • 4 & 5 Hybrid
  • 7, 8 & 9 Irons
  • Pitching Wedge
  • Sande Wedge
  • Putter
  • Cart Bag

TaylorMade RBZ Speedlite Complete 13-Piece Set

The set comes with the option of steel or graphite shafts for the irons only. The driver and hybrids are graphite. So, if you choose steel shafts, the irons will come in steel and the driver and hybrids will be graphite.

This set comes with:

  • Driver
  • 3 & 5 Fairway
  • 4 & 5 Hybrid
  • 6, 7, 8 & 9 Irons
  • Pitching Wedge
  • Sand Wedge
  • Putter
  • Cart Bag
  • Headscovers

Golf Bags

If you are buying a complete set of golf clubs, it will usually come with a golf bag, so there is no need to purchase a separate one.

If you are building your own set of clubs, you will need something to put your clubs in. See our Golf Essentials section for our Golf Bags recommendations. If you intend to carry your bag around the course, opt for a lightweight one, otherwise, you might want to buy a golf push cart to carry your bag. See Golf Push Carts for some recommendations.

Golf Balls

There is an overwhelming range of golf balls on the market today. The reason being is that companies have engineered their golf balls to cater to golfers who are either looking for:

  • Greater distance
  • Straighter shots
  • Better control around the greens
  • All of the above!

This is quite daunting for a beginner, which is why we created this guide to help you cut through all the noise and make it as simple as possible to choose the right type of ball for you at this stage of your game.

If you want a deep dive into golf balls, what they are made of and how they work for difference aspects of your game, read our guide on 4 Factors to Consider When Buying a Golf Ball.

If you want to keep it simple, read on as we list our Top 5 Golf Balls for Beginners. We considered the following 3 factors for our recommendations:

  • A low compression ball that is softer which allows players with a slower swing speed (which beginners generally have) to generate more distance.
  • A reduced spin ball resulting in straighter shots.
  • An affordable price as you might lose quite a few balls when starting out.

We acknowledge that not all beginner’s needs are the same and all golfers are different, so a ball that is perfect for one might not be the best for another. This is why it is important to try different types of balls and brands to see how they work for you.

Golf Gloves

As with most things in golf there is a myriad of choices for each category of equipment and accessories. To help you decide, we break down the main things to look for in a glove.

4 things to consider when choosing a golf glove

1. Playing Conditions
Do you typically play in warm, cold or wet weather? Maybe its all conditions. There is a glove to suit most conditions.

2. Size
Golf gloves should fit like a second skin. It should be nice and tight across the palm of your hand and through the fingers. There should be no extra material at the tips of your fingers and you don’t want your hand moving around.

3. Material
The traditional material is cabretta leather, however, there are now gloves made of synthetic materials and a combination of leather and synthetic. Softer and higher quality gloves made using cabretta leather usually provide better tackiness and grips.

4. Price
As with anything, there are affordable ones and pricy ones. Generally you get what you pay for, but there are some good gloves that are affordable and reliable.

Check out our Golf Gloves guide for our full glove recommendations, including ones for different conditions. Otherwise read on for a few suggestions. Also read our Golf Gloves FAQs for more information.

When buying golf gloves, here are some things to keep in mind:

  • Gloves usually come in a pack of 1, make sure read the package carefully, so you know what you are getting. There are some that sell 2 gloves in one pack.
  • Hand Orientation means the hand the glove is to be worn on. For example, Hand Orientation – Left, means you wear the glove on your left hand and you are a right handed golfer. You might also see just the words Left or Right, also meaning the hand the glove is to be worn on, eg. Left = worn on left hand. The labelling can sometimes be confusing.
  • Size – Make sure you check the size in the description so you know what you are purchasing.

Golf Gloves FAQs

How many gloves do golfer’s wear?
Traditionally golfers wear one glove, however, you can most certainly wear two. As a beginner you might want to consider wearing a glove on both hands to avoid blisters. You can always go down to just one later.

Which hand should I wear the glove?
If you are only wearing one glove, you would wear the glove on your non-dominant hand. For example, if you are a right handed golfer, you would wear the glove on your left hand. If you are a left handed golfer, wear it on your right hand.

Make sure you check the label when you are buying gloves so that you are getting the correct one for the hand you want it for. If you are right handed, you would buy a glove labelled ‘Left’ for your left hand.

How do you care for a golf glove?

  • If you sweat a lot, take an extra glove and rotate them as necessary throughout the game. This will allow the unused glove time to dry.
  • After your game, take them out of your bag and let them air out. If they are sweaty or you’ve played in the rain, make sure they dry out.
  • When not in use, lay it out flat, don’t leave them scrunched up in your bag.

Can I wash my gloves?

Note: most leather gloves are not washable, make sure you check the label before washing. That said, you can clean your glove using a soft, damp cloth. Do not overly wet the glove and don’t rub excessively.

You can use a little soap if it needs a thorough clean, but make sure you rinse well.

After washing, lay it out flat to dry, out of direct sunlight. Put the glove on soon after it dries to stretch it back into shape.

Golf Tees

You can buy wooden, bamboo or plastic tees of varying lengths.

  • Wood golf tees – The most common type. They do tend to break more easily.
  • Plastic golf tees – More durable, but has a tendency to bend.
  • Bamboo golf tees – Usually stronger than normal wood tees, but they still break more easily than plastic. They are also biodegradable if uncoated so they leave behind no negative impacts on the course.

Divot Repair Tool and Ball Marker

What is a Divot Repair Tool used for?

Divot tools are used for repairing pitch marks in the surface of the green. Pitch marks are often left when a golf ball lands heavily onto a green, leaving a little depression or crater in the ground.

It is good golf etiquette to repair pitch marks and one that is a good habit to get into. A pitch mark that has gone un-repaired can kill the grass and leave holes in a beautiful, smooth green. Every golfer has an obligation to help take care of the courses we play.

As you can see, it is important to repair the pitch marks, but it is also just as important do to it correctly. Click HERE for a video on how do repair pitch marks correctly.

What is a golf ball marker?

A golf ball marker is a small object used to mark the position of a golf ball on the green. They are usually in the form of a small, flat disc, like a coin.

Marking your ball on the green means you can pick up your ball to allow other players to putt without obstruction. To learn more about marking your ball, read our guide on Rules for Marking your Ball.

Sunscreen

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, skin cancer is the most common cancer in America and worldwide. More than 9,500 people are diagnosed with skin cancer every day in the U.S.

Golfers spend many hours out in the elements, which is why it is so important to protect your skin from UV rays. You should wear sunscreen every time you play, even on cloudy days as UV rays can come through the clouds.

You should look for sunscreens that contain zinc oxide, which is the best product for providing protection from both UVA and UVB rays. These sunscreens sits on top of your skin and reflects the sun’s rays.

Below are some zinc based sunscreens you might like to try.
